Portugal Telecom to bring fibre to 3 million more homes

Friday 6 November 2015 | 14:43 CET | News
Portugal Telecom has presented its strategic goal of expanding its fibre-optic network to an additional 3 million homes and businesses. A total of 30,000 km of fibre-optic cable will be built in five years, at a rhythm of 600,000 homes passed per year. The number of homes passed in Portugal will reach 5.3 million by 2020, enabling high-speed and high-quality services, to be supplied by PT.

The services will include video in HD and Ultra HD and an unlimited number of TV sets connected without the need for set-top boxes. As a result of the implementation of the NGPON2 technology from Q1 2016, the current fibre access speeds will go up from 2.5 Gbps/1.25 Gbps (download/upload) to 40 Gbps/40 Gbps or even 80 Gbps/80 Gbps.
