Radisys, Mavenir make it easier to deploy M-Cord with integrated system

Radisys and Mavenir have inked a new partnership deal, saying they will work together to provide communication service providers (CSPs) with a way to commercially deploy an M-Cord (Mobile Central Office Re-architected as a Datacenter) open reference system. As an emerging platform for 5G, M-Cord will allow CSPs to provide the capabilities needed to boost innovation across the open networking ecosystem with cloud economies. Specifically, the companies said commercially deployable system will enable new types of use cases for M-Cord, a more flexible service delivery, and ultimately a new value chain for CSPs.

All M-Cord services will be able to run on DCEngine, the Radisys open compute platform, or on CSPs’ preferred hardware platform.

Radisys and Mavenir intend to bring virtualised Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) to M-Cord, helping the system and CSPs scale up or down their throughput, transaction rate and session capacity. Radisys has integrated Mavenir’s carrier-grade vEPC into its M-Cord distribution. The company said that benchmarking the system on 40 cores on the M-Cord reference platform yielded a performance of over 15 Gbps.

The companies will be able to provide a turnkey M-Cord system by integrating Mavenir’s vEPC with Mavenir and Radisy LTE Cloud RAN systems for virtual BaseBand Units (vBBUs), bundled with the Radisys custom development and additional integration services. This will give a viable path to commercial deployment of M-Cord with a carrier-grade EPC and RAN. Radisys also offers M-Cord development Pods for CSPs to deploy their own proof-of-concepts.
