Rakuten opens Paris R&D centre

Japanese e-commerce group Rakuten's CEO, Hiroshi Mikitani, told La Tribune that the Rakuten Institute of Technology (RIT) in Paris, the company's first R&D site in Europe, will have over 20 engineers by the end of the year. The centre currently has eight employees. Mikitani said the company looked at other European cities, but was pleasantly surprised by the number of talented engineers in France. Tax relief for research was also a determining factor, although its effect will be gradual as Rakuten is not making enough profit yet to benefit fully. Although without this incentive, Mikitani says
