Russian govt approves draft law on public telecom services, refers to parliament

Wednesday 14 August 2019 | 11:29 CET | News

The Russian government has approved a draft amendment to the law on public telecommunications services, reports Comnews.ru. The draft document has been referred to the lower chamber of parliament. The draft amendment excludes data and internet services via collective hotspots from the list of public services, but includes mobile services in settlements with 100 to 500 residents.

Implementation of the law is expected to be phased in gradually. It would become valid in settlements with 250 to 500 residents from 2024 and in villages with 100 to 250 residents from 2026.

According to representatives of national operator Rosteecom, collective internet access points in villages have not been operational for several years already, because of insufficient funding of a state contract.

It is expected that the law could be adopted this year.
