Rwandan mobile penetration reached 53.1% in December

Rwanda's mobile phone penetration reached 53.1 percent by December 2012 compared with 44.4 percent in June 2012, according to the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA). By 31 December 2012, the number of active mobile phone subscribers reached 5.69 million, up from 4.7 million in June 2012. MTN-Rwanda is still the market leader with a reported 3.43 million users followed by Tigo with 1.87 million. Airtel's number of subscribers rose from 110,304 in June last year to 391,072 subscribers by the end of December. This translates to 40,000 new clients per month.
