Safaricom, CBA launch smart device hire purchase scheme

Monday 19 January 2015 | 10:39 CET | News
Kenyan operator Safaricom and Commercial Bank of Africa (CBA) have formally introduced a proposition to enable M-Shwari customers to access affordable loans to acquire smartphones and tablets. 'Smart Loan' will let Safaricom subscribers purchase smart devices on monthly instalments, to remove any possible barriers to digital inclusion. Customers will put down a 30 percent deposit then pay the difference in instalments of up to six months. Following a pilot launch of the Smart Loan service a month ago, Safaricom has sold over 6,500 devices using it.
