Safaricom employee charged with stealing money from dead client's account

Kenyan operator Safaricom has been arraigned in court for allegedly stealing the phone number of a dead woman. Employee Peter Odhiambo Ochieng was charged with accessing a Safaricom number on 26 July belonging to the late Janet Khaniri. Odhiambo is further accused of stealing KES 45,600 of her property on the same date at an unknown place within the republic of Kenya.

The suspect appeared before Magistrate Martha Mutuku and pleaded not guilty to all charges. His lawyer pleaded for lenient bond terms as he is the sole bread winner to a very young family. He told the court that he is facing a similar charge in another court where Safaricom is sthe complainant. The court released him on a cash bail of KES 100,000 or an alternative of KES 200,000 bond.
