Safaricom seeks lower roaming charges in East Africa

Tuesday 17 September 2013 | 11:30 CET | News
Kenyan operator Safaricom has called on East African Community (EAC) governments to prioritise talks on high cross-border calling rates. CEO Bob Collymore said the prevailing rates are a barrier to the EAC common market protocol. which has been in existence since July 2010. Safaricom's calls to the US, Canada and India are charged KES 10 a minute, cheaper than East Africa's KES 18 a minute. Kenya's ICT cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i voiced the same concern, but said the government would investigate major factors keeping the costs high, The Star reported.
