Sectra gains 'restricted' level approval from EU for Tiger smartphone encryption system

Tuesday 17 April 2018 | 11:40 CET | News

Swedish medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra said that its Tiger encrypted smartphone system has been approved by the European Union (EU) for the communication of information at the 'restricted' ('restreint') security level. This is a classification used for information which, if it fell into the wrong hands, could pose a threat to national security. Tiger is based on the Samsung Knox platform.

Sectra Communications president Simo Pykalisto said this approval from the EU confirms that Sectra’s product stands up to eavesdropping and hacking attempts from the most resourceful parties in the world.

Sectra Tiger/R was developed by Sectra under guidance from the Dutch National Communications Security Agency (NL-NCSA). The EU is the latest organisation to grant 'restricted' approval for Sectra Tiger/R, joining the NL-NCSA and NATO.

The Sectra Tiger/R system can be installed out of the box on the latest Samsung smartphone or tablet models, without the need for device adaptation.

Besides encrypted speech and messages at the 'restricted' level, e-mail, calendars and other internal applications can be safely used for unclassified, sensitive information, since the traffic is protected by Sectra's mobile-adapted VPN.
