Sicily joins Wi-Fi Italia tourist hotspot project

Monday 31 July 2017 | 10:29 CET | News
Italy's Ministry of Economic Development (MISE) has announced that Sicily has become the third region to join its Wi-Fi Italia tourist hotspot project. The regions of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna have already signed up to the plan to provide free, non-discriminatory access to local Wi-Fi access points to EU citizens and visitors alike as well as providing online services via a dedicated app. Pilot projects have also been launched in Rome, Milan, Florence, Prato, Bari and Trento, with 50,000 users installing the app on their mobile devices in the first week alone, said MISE in a statement.

Does this mean that the APP will allow WIFI use on your phone in general, or will it only be connected to participating cultural, governmental, and other institutions? With the APP will you have access to your email and the news, etc? This could be very meaningful to tourists who are always struggling with how to keep up without spending a fortune on data plans.
