SK partners Sinclair Broadcast to develop ATSC 3.0 platform

Friday 12 January 2018 | 11:59 CET | News

SK Telecom announced that the company will jointly explore the development of an ATSC 3.0 TV platform with Sinclair Broadcast Group, the largest TV broadcaster in the US, and its subsidiary ONE Media 3.0. The Korean operator signed a MoU with Sinclair and ONE Media at CES in Las Vegas.

By the first half of this year, the three companies will build an ATSC 3.0 broadcast platform. The new terrestrial TV standards will allow the delivery of UHD content, customized IP-based services for interactivity, personalized and location-based advertising, fixed and mobile broadcast and new emergency alert services. SK said the new platform will take advantage of the ability to deliver TV to mobile devices.

In addition to the US, the partners plan to take their platform to India, which is also pursuing the new broadcasting standards. They will take advantage of SK Telecom’s mobile IPTV and media technologies, including MPEG Media Transport for ultra-low latency transmission of HD video to mobile devices. SK also provides subscriber-based content recommendations and IP-based media service such as optimized network service using AI.
