Sky Italia appeals against new copyright regulations

Italian pay-TV operator Sky Italia has lodged an appeal against the extensive powers granted to Italy's communications regulator AgCom in the new Italian copyright regulations that entered into force on 31 March. AgCom now has the power to close down sites hosting infringing content and issue fines of up to EUR 258,000 if a take-down order is not complied with. Sky considers such powers "anti-constitutional" and has become the first company to appeal against measures that allow AgCom to block not only websites but also TV programmes that allegedly infringe copyright.
