Smart speaker shipments almost double in Q4, led by Amazon, Google

Smart speaker shipments almost doubled in the fourth quarter, amounting to more than all of 2017, according to the latest study from Strategy Analytics. Shipments for the quarter grew 95 percent to 38.5 million units, taking the total for 2018 to 86.2 million units. Amazon and Google were the stars of the quarter, both lifting their market share in the quarter thanks to the popularity of their low-cost Echo Dot and Home Mini speakers. Apple did well with its HomePod, with sales for the device rising 45 percent, but its market share still fell back.
