South African govt says nearly 500,000 homes are connected to fibre

South African government says fibre is potentially the most critical component of all telecommunications infrastructure in the country and without further deployment, it will not be able to enter the 5G race, reports BusinessTech. Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams told a forum that at the end of June, about 1.5 million end points had been passed, with a total of over 600,000 connections, comprising over 496,000 homes that are connected and billed, and over 114,000 business premises.
