South African govt to cut broadband costs via competition

The South African government wants to reduce the cost of broadband drastically by introducing more competition, MyBroadband reported. Communications Minister Dina Pule told the ICT Indaba Africa Conference in Cape Town that mobile broadband subscriptions grew by 31 percent in 2011 to 4.2 million. She said the government is concerned that broadband prices remain very high, based on purchasing power parity in comparison with some OECD countries such as Mexico, Chile and Hungary.
