South African school governance body seeks mobile phone ban

South Africa's National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) wants to see mobile phones outlawed in schools, but some suggest a veto would be ineffective and even harmful to pupils. NASGB general secretary Matakanye Matakanye said mobile phones create distractions for children in the classroom, ITnewsafrica reported. The development of social media platforms like Facebook, BlackBerry Messenger and WhatsApp are taking children's attention away from their teachers. Music and undesirable material on mobile phones are other issues that are causing the learning environment to break down.
