Spain designates Telefonica as universal service provider

The Spanish government has decided that Telefonica will continue to provide the universal telecom services. The Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Digital Agenda designated Telefonica after no operators applied in the tender for the universal service contracts. Telefonica will continue to provide fixed telephony and basic internet connections for three years as well as operate the payphone network for one year, starting 01 January 2017.
