Spain fines operator EUR 10,000 for Premium SMS offence

Spain's telecoms regulator CNMC has ordered the company Bytel to pay a fine of EUR 10,000 for sending Premium SMS to customers via a number, 27020, that wasn't registered for this type of service. The number was assigned to the company for multimedia download and marketing services but instead it used the number to send messages to customers inviting them to join a chat service, prompting them to reply with a premium SMS at a cost of EUR 1.20. Although the offence only occurred over a two-month period from February to March 2013, the CNMC imposed its first fine due to breach of Premium SMS
