Spain to pay operators EUR 9 mln/mth if frequencies delayed

The Spanish government will have to pay Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange at least EUR 300,000 a day (EUR 9 million a month) if it fails to open up the 800 MHz frequencies by 01 January 2015, as initially scheduled. Spanish daily Expansion reports that, according to the government's calculations, compensation of EUR 100,000 a day to each operator is the minimum amount it would have to pay for failing to meet the conditions of the sale of spectrum blocks in the 800 MHz band from 2015 to 2030, for which Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange paid out a total of EUR 1.3 billion in the summer of 2011.
