Spain to start removing public payphones from January - report

The Spanish government is set to give the go ahead to remove the country's public payphones from universal service obligations starting on 01 January 2019, reports local daily El Indepiendente. Earlier this year the government announced that Telefonica will continue to operate the payphone network and publish directories until 31 December 2018 after no operators applied in the tender for the universal service contracts. However, the Council of Ministers will now approve a royal decree ending Telefonica's obligation on the grounds that payphones have become obsolete in the era of mobile
