Spanish SMS revenues fall by 67% since 2011 - survey

The number of SMS sent by Spanish users fell from 1.98 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 887.7 million in the same period of 2013, with the corresponding revenues declining by 66.7 percent from EUR 186.19 million in 2011 to EUR 61.87 million in 2013. The data released by Spain's telecoms regulator CNMC confirms the ever-increasing popularity of OTT chat services such as WhatsApp, Skype, Fring, Telegram, Line and Viber, which has prompted many operators to reduce the cost of sending individual SMS or even bundle unlimited messaging in their tariffs.
