Spanish universal service costs top EUR 31.9 mln in 2011

Spanish telecommunication regulator CNMC has calculated that the net cost of universal service provision for 2011 amounts to EUR 31.94 million. By comparison, in 2010, universal service costs reached EUR 43.58 million, while in 2009 the costs amounted to EUR 46.78 million. Incumbent operator Telefonica is in charge of universal service provision in Spain. Spain's universal service fund is used to deliver telecommunications services to those living in isolated neighborhoods, the disabled, consumers entitled to tariff reductions and information services.
