Spanish watchdog reiterates proposal to remove payphones from universal service

Thursday 20 June 2019 | 10:51 CET | News
Spain's communications regulator CNMC has published a new report proposing to remove universal service obligations for public payphones in view of the ever-decreasing demand for the booths in the era of mobile telephony and their increasing unprofitability. The watchdog said there has been a widespread decline in the traffic and unit revenue per cabin throughout the national territory, as a result of which it's reiterating the recommendation included in its 2016 report to review the need to maintain payphone provision within universal service obligations.
