Spectranet says tower costs, connectivity charges hit Nigerian ISPs

The Internet Service Provider (ISP) market in Nigeria has been on a steep decline and may eventually collapse unless urgent measures are taken, the Guardian reported. It claimed 90 percent of ISPs in the country have gone out of business, leaving the space for the likes of Spectranet, Swift, Direct on Data and Smile Communications. Chief Executive Officer of Spectranet Ajay Awasthi said the cost structure was adverse to the operators' survival, stressing that 30 to 40 percent of their earnings is spent on tower expenses.
