Streaming giants to appeal against songwriter royalty increase in US

Spotify, Google, Pandora and Amazon have joined forces to lodge an appeal against last year's ruling by the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) in the US that payouts to songwriters should be increased by 44 percent, reports Variety. In a joint statement, the companies claimed the decision is potentially harmful to music licensees and copyright owners alike. "The CRB, in a split decision, recently issued the US mechanical statutory rates in a manner that raises serious procedural and substantive concerns. If left to stand, the CRB's decision harms both music licensees and copyright owners.
