Tanzania switches off over 603,000 fake phones

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) on 16 June switched off 603,000 fake phones. TCRA Communications Manager Innocent Mungy said the exercise went as planned. He said all phones without legitimate International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers were blocked. The around 603,000 mobile devices with invalid IMEIs account for around 2.9 percent of phones in use in the country. Mungy warned traders against changing IMEI numbers of mobile devices because it was against the law, adding that whoever was caught would be subject to a USD 15,000 fine, 10 years imprisonment or
