TEAMs plans Kenya-Ethiopia cable link to curb losses

The East African Marine Cable System (TEAMs) plans to lay another inland fibre optic cable connecting Kenya to Ethiopia to cushion it from losses caused by cuts on its undersea cable at the coast, the Business Daily reported. The operator says it will install fibre optic cables from Nanyuki in central to Mandera in northern Kenya and later connect it to a network in Djibouti. The venture, which is expected to begin in eight to twelve months, is expected to cost about KES 1.67 billion with the bulk of the money to come from the government, which owns a 20 percent stake.
