Telecom Agency takes lead in assessing AI risks

Tuesday 30 June 2020 | 10:32 CET | News

The Netherlands' Telecom Agency said it's developing a model to assess the risks of AI in the telecom sector. This follows the commissioning of a report from Dialogic looking at the opportunities and threats for the sector from the growing use of artificial intelligence.

The report expects the use of AI to accelerate with the development of 5G networks. While this brings new advantages in efficiency and innovation, such as self-driving cars and medical robots, it also creates new risks such as data manipulation and chain effects in telecom networks. Dialogic developed a model to assess the potential risks and help the agency in its oversight function.

Recommendations cover raising awareness and public information, mandatory transparency measures, facilitating risk analysis and developing standards. The Telecom Agency has already started on standards, both at the national and international levels. The regulator said it will continue to work with regulators in other sectors as well to share the general recommendations and developments in monitoring AI.
