Telefonica authorised to close iconic Barcelona ADSL exchange

Thursday 7 March 2019 | 11:21 CET | News
Spain's communications regulator CNMC has authorised Telefonica to close down its "Barcelona / Catalunya" ADSL exchange, located in an iconic building occupied by the company since 1929, due to the rapid expansion of its FTTH network in the city. Although the operator previously informed the watchdog that it intended to phase out the plant's copper service, it required express authorisation for its complete closure, said the CNMC. It will now migrate the plant's FTTH service to the "Barcelona / Gracia" exchange by 2023 at the latest.
