Telefonica, which operates under the Movistar brand in Mexico, will begin switching off its 2G mobile service later this month with a view to finalising the process by the end of the third quarter of 2020, reports business daily El Economista, citing an email sent to Notimex. The operator officially notified telecommunications regulator IFT of its 2G shutdown plans earlier this year, shortly after rival AT&T. It has now confirmed that the 2G network will be suspended over the course of 18 months starting in Merida (Yucatan) on 31 March and ending in Mexico City on 30 September 2020.
