Telefonica Mexico unit handed record fine for dropped calls

Tuesday 10 November 2015 | 10:43 CET | News
Mexico's telecoms watchdog has imposed a record fine of MXN 410.9 million on Pegaso Tecnologia, a unit of Spain's Telefonica, on grounds of failure to meet minimum levels of mobile service quality. In a statement, the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) specified that the fine was the largest handed down since the watchdog was formed in September 2013 as part of larger reform of Mexican telecom regulations. The IFT said it heard Pegaso's arguments in defence of its actions but decided to impose the fine by 5 votes to 2 in view of the operator's "high proportion of dropped calls".
