Telefonica's domestic unit (Telefonica Espana) has announced a strategic agreement with e-sports company ESL to develop a platform with exclusive content for its Movistar+ brand in Spain and to create a professional club for electronic sports. Under the terms of the deal, Telefonica will launch a dedicated channel called Movistar eSports covering matches from leagues such as ESL One, ESL Intel Extreme and ESL Masters Series. The company has also set up an e-sports club called Movistar Riders made up of various professional video game teams based at the Movistar Game Centre. Huawei’s Honor brand will be the official partner of Movistar Riders.

The operator is following rivals Vodafone and Orange Spain in moving into the fast-growing e-sports sector.  Orange recently reached an agreement with e-sports league LVP (Liga de Videojuegos Profesional) to change the name of Spain’s top-tier division to Superliga Orange while Vodafone sponsors the G2 team, located at a dedicated gaming room set up at the operator’s Madrid headquarters.
