Telefonica unveils first LatAm R&D centre in Chile

Telefonica has unveiled what it described as the first research and development centre in Latin America in Chile's capital Santiago. The company said the new Internet of Things-focused R&D facility could produce commercially viable industry technologies for smart cities and smart industries (mining and agriculture) by the end of the year. Chile's state development agency Corfo and private university UDD helped fund the USD 24 million initiative, whose stated aim is to contribute to and facilitate the development of new telephony products and services over the course of the next 20 years.
