Telenor uses IoT to measure avalanche risk on Svalbard

Friday 8 February 2019 | 12:34 CET | News
Telenor said it has begun a pilot project to improve avalanche warnings. In 2015 and 2016, large avalanches hit Longyearbyen on Svalbard. Weather reports prior to the 2015 avalanche did not indicate that evacuation was necessary. Over several years, Telenor Svalbard has been cooperating with the University Centre in Svalbard on measuring snow and avalanche risk and the result may contribute to a better, more factual overview of snow drifts in areas that could present dangers.
