Italian satellite services provider Telespazio, a Finmeccanica company, has won a contract to install a satellite broadband network on 18 ships of the Guardia di Finanza police force. The contract involves installing a dual antenna for satellite broadband communications to give the force's naval units access to a broadband channel for tactical and strategic services that were previously available only in HF, VHF or via narrow band satellite phone. The main services available on board will include intranet and internet, videoconferencing and VoIP, as well as the C4i command and control system used by the Naval Air Force, including the ability to send real-time images and video to the relevant operations room.
