Telia to scrap Swedish public phone booths in 2015

Wednesday 25 September 2013 | 11:42 CET | News
Telia said the last of Sweden's remaining 1,200 telephone booths will be removed in 2015, and that only 1 percent of people in the country have used a payphone in the past year. At their peak, at the start of the 1980s, there were about 44,000 phone kiosks in Sweden. The first Swedish phone kiosk appeared in Stockholm in the 1890s, but their usage dropped dramatically with the advent of affordable mobile telephony in the 1990s. Even the installation of internet booths in the mid-2000s could not stop their demise, said Telia.
