Telkom mulls turning payphones into Wi-Fi hotspots

South Africa's Telkom is investigating the feasibility of turning its network of public payphones into Wi-Fi hotspots. CMO Enzo Scarcella told SABC News that the idea was still at its infancy. Scarcella said that in 1994, as few as 15 percent of South Africans had access to telephony, with payphones therefore prevalent, but since the advent of mobile, the penetration rate has increased to approximately 128 percent.
