Telkom says retrenchment to continue despite union protests

South African fixed line operator Telkom says retrenchment will proceed despite trade union protests, IntelliNews reported. Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko said the company will do all it can to help those getting retrenched. Telkom recently issued retrenchment letters to 105 employees which it said could not be placed in alternative positions within the company. The move drew strong criticism from organised labour. Telkom said in its statement that its commitment throughout the discussions has been "to conduct this difficult process with respect to both the letter and the spirit of South Africa's
