Tigo Tanzania appeals TZS 2 bln copyright damages

A court has awarded two Tanzanian musicians TZS 2.18 billion in special damages in a landmark ruling that could set a precedent in the application of the copyright law in the country, The Citizen reported. The artists Ambwene Yessaya "AY" and Hamisi Mwinjuma "MwanaFA" had sued mobile operator Tigo Tanzania for unauthorised use of their music as caller tunes. The award follows a four-year court battle between the parties. It also includes a separate TZS 25 million in general damages.
