TIM leads drop in Brazil mobile market in July

The Brazil mobile market lost another 113,100 mobile lines in July for a total 242.01 million, according to the latest data from Anatel. TIM Brasil again had the biggest drop, with a monthly loss of over 326,000 to 60.50 million.

With a gain of 67,500 new customers in the month, Claro Brasil is approaching TIM's second-place in the market, with a total 60.34 million customers. Vivo remains market leader with 74.52 million mobile customers, up by 180,800 from June. 

The MVNOs Datora and Porto Seguro also continued to gain customers, of respectively 18,000 and nearly 39,000 in July, while Oi lost another 90,800 customers for a total 41.94 million. 

In the last 12 months, the Brazil mobile market has lost 10.56 million lines (-4.18%). Anatel said this was due in part to its decision to cut the interconnection tariff by more than 90 percent, leading to fewer customers with multiple Sims. 

Of the total mobile lines in the country, 159.23 million were prepaid and 82.77 million postpaid in July. Prepaid mobile lines decreased by 960,321 compared to June (-0.60%) and postpaid grew by 847,221 (+1.03%). In 12 months, the prepaid segment registered a decrease of 18.18 million lines (-10.25%) and postpaid lines increased by 7.61 million (+10.14%).

In the last 12 months, Datora posted the highest growth with the addition of 93,350 lines (+128%) and Porto Seguro increased by 189,040 (+51.45%). Nextel added 102,103 new lines (+4.14%). In absolute numbers, the biggest growth was Vivo with 1.13 million new lines in operation (+1.55%). Of the other major operators, Oi reported a loss of 5.33 million lines (-11.28%), Claro lost 3.67 million lines (-5.75%), and TIM saw a reduction of 3.07 million (-4.84%).

The number of 4G lines grew by 41.11 million units (+95.63%), while M2M saw an increase of 2.18 million lines (+18.55%).
