Ugandan mobile money transfers exceed UGX 11 trln in 2012

The amount transferred by Uganda's mobile money platforms grew by 211 percent in 2012 to UGX 11.7 trillion, the highest since the services began four years ago, reported the Daily Monitor, citing Deputy Bank of Uganda governor Louis Kasekende. This compares with an estimated 84.7 million mobile money transactions made in 2011 with a total value of UGX 3.75 trillion. The number of mobile commerce users in Uganda has gone up from 1.8 million in 2010 to 2.8 million at the end of December 2011 to 8.9 million at the end of December 2012.
