UK government drops plans for broadband tax

Wednesday 7 April 2010 | 13:01 CET | News
The proposed tax on phone lines to fund next-generation broadband roll-out has been dropped ahead of the General Election, reports BBC News Online. The move comes as the Digital Economy Bill gets its second reading in the House of Commons as the government looks to rush the legislation through before parliament is dissolved. The government had hoped to raise around GBP 170 million a year from the GBP 0.50 per month tax on all homes with landline phones to finance super-fast broadband roll-out. The Conservatives had pledged to drop the tax if they had won the election and it had become law.
