UK govt announces new trial payment scheme for TV licence fee

The UK Government has announced the trial of new payment plans for the TV licence fee. Customers on this new plan will pay the same amount as everyone else (currently GBP 150.50 per year), but will be able to spread the cost evenly each month over the course of the year.

The new flexible payment plan is designed to help those who might struggle to pay the licence fee and was a key recommendation in the 2015 licence fee review. A 6-month sign-up period will run from 01 April to end-September, with the trial plan open to select customer groups - those who have contacted debt charities for advice; those who previously held a licence which was cancelled for missed payment; and those who have been questioned under caution for licence fee evasion.

Customers on the scheme will be compared to other groups to see how well they maintain payments and if they renew their licence. This assessment period will run until September 2019, after which the BBC will evaluate its success.
