UK govt confirms pilot scheme to teach coding to prisoners

Friday 15 March 2019 | 10:57 CET | News

The UK Government has announced a new pilot scheme to teach coding in prison to help offenders return to world. The scheme will help carefully vetted prisoners earn digital skills and is part of a GBP 1.2 million package of measures to help under-represented groups secure jobs.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has given new funding of GBP 100,000 to Code 4000, an organisation that works with vetted offenders and has conducted a successful trial at HMP Humber. It will use the funds to expand the scheme to HMP Holm House to reach over 1,000 more prisoners. The grant will also fund a new employment hub in Sheffield to provide support, mentoring and training for graduates of the scheme once they leave prison.

The over GBP 1 million package will fund regional and local initiatives to help those from under-represented groups learn digital skills, including women from disadvantaged backgrounds, those with autism, and people living in lower socio-economic areas. This will also see three new Local Digital Skills Partnerships established in the South East, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, and Cheshire and Warrington. These will complement the Local DSPs launched in 2018 in Lancashire, West Midlands Combined Authority and Heart of the South West; and will boost the total number of people with access to the programme to over 10 million.
