UK govt to hand oversight of BBC to Ofcom - report

The UK government is preparing to axe the BBC Trust and hand its powers over to Ofcom, reports The Telegraph citing unnamed Westminster sources. The move is expected to be unveiled in a Green Paper that will formally launch negotiations for renewal of the BBC Charter. This would be the first time that the BBC is governed by an external body. The move will be a partial rejection of proposals made by BBC Trust chair Rona Fairhead, who suggested earlier in 2015 that the Trust could be replaced with a new body dedicated to BBC regulation.
