Ukrtelecom backs rural broadband expansion programme

Friday 31 July 2020 | 14:02 CET | News

Ukrainian fixed operator Ukrtelecom announced that it supports the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Transformation to cover 95 percent of the rural population with broadband networks developed under a public-private partnership. Around 65 percent of the population in rural areas are currently able to access broadband.

Ukrtelecom proposes to carry out the programme in two stages. Around 3,900 villages with an average population of 200 residents would be covered within 24-30 months. This would require building 23,000 km of fibre-optic lines to the villages and 26,000 km of access lines. This stage would cover 85 percent of the rural population in the country. Ukrtelecom is ready to invest UAH 1.6 billion at this stage, while the investment of the state should total UAH 1.4 billion.

Small remote villages would be connected to broadband networks in the second stage of the programme. The infrastructure built during the first stage would be used for this purpose.

The government plans to allocate UAH 5.46 billion in the programme, and Ukrtelecom said it is also open to additional investments.
