United Against Nuclear Iran urges MTN to exit country

Friday 7 June 2013 | 12:19 CET | News
Pressure group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) has called for sanctions to be imposed on South African telecommunications firm MTN for its business in Iran. In a letter to MTN Group CEO Sifiso Dabengwa, UANI alleges that during the 2009 Iranian presidential elections, the regime utilised MTN Irancell's network and technology to block and monitor the communications of dissidents. MTN is listed first on UANI's 'Most Wanted' list. MTN is a 49 percent shareholder in MTN Irancell; the majority 51 percent is owned and controlled by the regime itself.
