Uruguay looking to tax Netflix, Spotify

Wednesday 7 October 2015 | 11:26 CET | News
The Uruguayan government is taking steps to tax OTT streaming video and music providers such Netflix and Spotify in response to a request from the Uruguayan National Broadcasters Association (Andebu), reports local daily El Observador. Netflix has been offering services in Uruguay since September 2011 and currently has around 120,000 local subscribers, said the report, adding that the government may require OTT providers to pay VAT as well as non-resident income tax. The authorities may also impose a retroactive tax payment going back up to five years, said the report.
