A total of 1.1 million mobile payment transactions were carried out in Uruguay during the first half of 2017, some four times more than the 282,000 reported in the same period of 2014, reports local daily El Observador, citing a study from the country’s central bank. The amount of money involved rose eight-fold, from USD 15 million to USD 119 million, over the same three-year period, with smartphones accounting for around one in five of all payment transactions carried out from January to June of this year.

Uruguay’s telecom sector regulator Ursec said the country had around 5.4 million mobile telephony subscribers at the end of 2016, equivalent to a penetration rate well above 150 percent.
