US pay-TV penetration falls to 83% from 87% in 2010

Some 83 percent of US homes subscribe to some kind of pay-TV service, compared to 81 percent in 2005 and 87 percent in 2010, according to a new study from Leichtman Research based on census information and a phone survey of over 1,200 people. Among non-subscribers, 63 percent use a SVoD service and 62 percent have terrestrial TV. Among TV households that do not currently subscribe to a pay-TV service, 17 percent paid for a service in the past year, while 70 percent of non-subscribers last subscribed over three years ago or never have.
